Welcome
to The Maxwell
This
handsome brick building was built by Harry Wardman in
1909. Wardman was the premier builder
in Washington at the time, and his name is still proudly
associated with the structures he built as a hallmark
of stately design and quality construction. The
Maxwell has wonderful light and views from many of the
apartments. The individual units have a flow and
a spacious feel that are extremely rare in this price
range.
The integrity and rhythm of the façade is being preserved by award-winning
architect Ward Bucher, who is adding two more balconies in the same design
as the original. The spacious skylit central stair hall is being restored. The
front porches, marble lobby, ceramic tile entry foyer with its distinctive
Greek key motif, and the dramatic interior double flying staircase are all
being preserved and restored. The spacious nature of the original
apartments has been enhanced, while layouts have been substantially improved.
Original hardwood parquet floors have been kept wherever possible.
